Outer wear is both functional, beating the cold and wet weather, and boldly macho in black leather. Recent history has provided the inspiration for jackets this fall and winter. The look is the ever-popular leather. The perforated leather jacket, especially in soft leather with a distressed look offers a really chic look for casual wear when the days are not yet too chilly. Black remains a classy but brown is making a good showing this season, as is a steel grey. Bomber jackets present a very bold leather look. They suggest a daring and audacious approach to life. They imitate the swashbuckling stance of the young men who flew airplanes into battle in frosty cockpits and under torrid conditions. The bomber jacket and the very similar biker jacket must be worn with confidence over a flamboyant pair of highly fashionable trousers or with a pair of designer jeans. The waist and wristbands are finished in a different fabric, either very elegantly in a soft fabric or in a ribbed fabric in colors designed to contrast sharply with the black or brown of the leather. Adding character to the jacket are the many pockets and the flashy fastenings and notions on sleeves and shoulders. Decidedly more elegant are the gorgeous double-breasted jackets that bring back memories of Clark Gable but the swaying oversized look of his time has been replaced by a waist-hugging shape that emphasizes the both the waist and the hips. The broad lapels and bold buttons are key features of the jacket that balance the tight waist. Worn in twill or cotton, these jackets look good for a formal occasion. For a more casual look, select a jacket in bright colors of the very voguish plaid. Designers have taken double-breasted jackets into the realm of trench coats this season. The trench coat is tinged with the horrors of war when heavy, warm jackets were necessary for survival in the trenches on the battlefield, but it was the apparel of brave men. The new trench coat soaks up the masculinity associated with its origins but moves sharply away from the awful dingy fabric of the times. The trench coat comes in strikingly beautiful fabrics of unusually pale, neutral colors, and in lightweight nylon, polyester or cotton that allows the coat to fall effortlessly into its natural folds. Belts and buckles dominate the quiet colors of the longer jacket and add zest to the chic shorter trench coat. Designers have signed their jackets with their trimmings. Soft fabrics on the armbands and on the wrist provide a foil to the toughness of the leather. Striped ribbing is also rather trendy, especially in informal settings. Add loads of pockets and your jacket will be a winner this year. The trendsetters are in the fortunate position of having a wide selection of jackets this season but the main looks in vogue will be the manly leather bomber jackets and double-breasted jackets.
